Dr. Alan Knight
Alan
has over 20 years experience with sustainability issues and is a
widely-recognised expert in regulation and standards development and analysis,
systems design and implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting
systems, stakeholder engagement, and institutional capacity building.
He
has been involved in many of the most significant sustainability standards
development initiatives of the last two decades, including the ISO 14000 series of environmental
management standards, the GRI
sustainability reporting guidelines, the ISO 26000
working group, and the AA1000 series of standards, including the standards for
sustainability assurance and stakeholder engagement.
He is currently actively
involved in the development of the Integrated Reporting Framework as a member
of IIRC Working Group, established under the auspices of the Prince of Wales
Accounting for Sustainability Initiative.
He has authored two books on
sustainability standards as well as numerous articles and reports, including a
number of reports on climate change and GHGs.
His
career has included seven years with the Canadian Standards Association, six
years with ICF Consulting advising Fortune 500 corporations, government
agencies and multi-lateral institutions on environmental and corporate
responsibility issues, and four years as the Country Director in Nigeria for a
large UK based development NGO and five years with AccountAbility.
Alan has
worked with many major international corporations in the utility,
manufacturing, oil and gas, aeronautics, chemical, and pulp and paper and
financial sectors, as well as a number of intergovernmental agencies and
National governments. He has worked in many countries in Europe, Africa, Asia,
and North and South America.
Over
the years he has been a member of numerous committees, councils and boards.
These currently include the Vodafone Group Sustainability Advisory Panel, the
ACCA Social and Environment Committee, the Transparency International Steering
Committee for the Business Principles for Countering Bribery, the GRI
Stakeholder Council and Technical Advisory Committee, and the IIRC Working Group.
Alan
Knight is a certified Environmental Auditor, and has a PhD from the University
of Alberta.
